1. Introduction

Recur.money ("we," "us," "our," or "Company") operates the Recur.money application (the "Service"). We built Recur.money because we believe looking at your spending shouldn't feel like a chore, and it definitely shouldn't mean sacrificing your privacy. We are committed to protecting your personal information and ensuring you have complete control over your financial data.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website or use our mobile application. Please read this privacy policy carefully to understand our views and practices regarding your personal data.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information that you provide directly to us and information automatically collected when you use our Service. We strictly limit data collection to what is necessary to provide the Recur experience.

A. Personal Data

When you register for an account, we may collect:

  • Identity Data: Name, email address, profile picture.
  • Authentication Data: Encrypted passwords or OAuth tokens (if you sign in with Google/GitHub).
  • Profile Data: Job title, location, timezone, and preferred currency settings.

B. Financial Data

To provide our core expense tracking services, we process the data you enter:

  • Transaction Data: Expense amounts, categories, dates, and descriptions.
  • Receipt Data: Images of receipts you upload for scanning.
  • Budget Data: Your spending limits and financial goals (e.g., "Dining Out" budgets).
Note: We do not sync directly with bank accounts using aggregators like Plaid by default, meaning we do not see your raw bank feeds unless you explicitly manually import or enter them.

C. Usage Data

We automatically collect certain technical information when you access the Service:

  • Device Information: IP address, browser type, operating system version.
  • Usage Metrics: Pages viewed, features used, and time spent to help us improve the app's performance.
  • AI Interaction Data: Metadata regarding your usage of our AI receipt scanning features (e.g., number of receipts scanned) to monitor quota usage.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect strictly to:

  • Provide the Service: Create and manage your account, store your transaction history, and generate your spending reports.
  • Improve the Service: Analyze usage patterns to enhance user experience (e.g., making the dashboard faster).
  • Communicate with You: Send you product updates, security alerts, and support messages.
  • Enforce Terms: Prevent fraud, spam, and ensure compliance with our Terms & Conditions.

We do NOT sell your personal or financial data to third parties. Your financial life is your own product, not ours.

4. Disclosure of Your Information

We may share information we have collected about you in specific, limited situations:

A. Service Providers

We share data with third-party vendors who perform critical infrastructure services for us:

  • Cloudinary: For secure, private storage of your receipt images and profile pictures.
  • Google Generative AI: For processing and extracting text data from your receipt images. (Images are processed and then discarded by the model context).
  • MongoDB Atlas: For secure, encrypted database hosting.
  • Vercel: For application hosting and global content delivery.

B. Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or a government agency).

5. Data Security

We use robust administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information.

  • Encryption: Passwords are hashed using bcrypt. Data in transit is encrypted via SSL/TLS. Data at rest is encrypted by our database provider.
  • Access Control: Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel only on a strict need-to-know basis.

While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the personal information you provide to us, please be aware that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information only for as long as is necessary to provide the Service.

  • Account Data: Retained as long as your account is active.
  • Receipt Images:
    • Free Tier: Retained for 15 days to save storage costs.
    • Premium Tier: Retained indefinitely while your subscription is active.
  • Deleted Accounts: If you delete your account, your data is hardened-deleted from our active databases within 30 days.

7. Your Data Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access: Request copies of your personal data.
  • Rectification: Request that we fix any inaccurate information.
  • Erasure: Request that we delete your personal data (available directly in Settings).
  • Export: Download your transaction history as a CSV at any time.
